Hi there.
When I saw an information about that Peugeot wants to resign from building sportive GTI versions I was dissapointed.
Unfortunately I knew it will be like that. Why ? Let me explain it to you.
In late 80's and early 90's Peugeot 205 GTI was an icon in GTI class.
After this time only one car was fast enought but didn't give enought fun from ride - Peugeot 306 gti-6.
Each next version of GTI you produced was worse... low power, to heavy, to many additional components.
What was the problem - people just prefered to buy faster cars, more aggressive than your gti or even RC...
If you look closly you'll see, that nowadays on some racetracks modified peugeot 205 GTI are one of the fastes cars .
Do you know why is that ? Don't think so, because each new model got bigger, have a/c, navigation - who needs that in a GTI - it's a sports car...
Let me explain to you how GTI should looks like:
1. Low weight - that's very important, in my opinion it shoudn't weight more than 2400 lbs (with 4x4)
2. Powerfull engine - In my opinion there should be engine 2.2 THP generating something beetween 270-320hp
3. 4x4 (like in subaru impreza, 4 wheels getting full power all the time, no electronics)
4. Hard, and low suspension to get more grip
5. No additional equipment - power windows, power stearing wheel (like in 405 where you can feel it,
not like in 406 where it is just to light) eventually ABS. That's it. No AC, navigation, airbags, additional accident support etc...
If somebody have an accident in car whitch makes 200km/h in 11 seconds, no airbags or supporting won't help... so it's just a waiste of weight...
In my opinion there should be a project of Peugeot Rally:
Should looks like peugeot 205 (ofcourse a little bit more modern) with all 5 points mentioned before. With this project, you would dominate market.
If this car would cost something like 18000 EUR I would buy it myself... Probably I would have to stand in line because people would be massively
interested in such a machine.
I hope that Peugeot will come back with a great Peugeot Rally and will beat every other companies like subaru, mitsubishi, bmw etc...
Take care.
